Shades of Blue
"4...3...2...1! Ready or not, here I come!" The sound of children playing echoed out from the small playground. It was a happy sound as is expected from children, innocent and free. It was not long before the sweet sound was replaced by a screech, then a scream. "Molly!" The children ran to crowd around the fence to see if they could get a view of what happened. Parents all surrounded a car and a lump on the ground. As the children watched the commotion, waiting to get a glimpse of what happened, it began to rain. This day of play had turned into one of sorrow.
The driver of the red station wagon crouched in front of the car with his hands covering his face, still in disbelief. Two young children sat in the street, tears filled their eyes as they looked down at the lump on the ground which had saved them from being hit by the car. One adult knelt down and picked up the lump of fur, a stray neighborhood dog whom the kids named Blue because of it's light blue eyes.
Blue was a Siberian Husky who was born in a litter of 8. As the runt of the litter, Blue was the last puppy chosen. The couple that adopted Blue was a loving elderly couple who had lost a dog about 6 months before they adopted Blue. Their first dog, Chelsea, was a border collie who lived to be 16 years old. As a new little puppy, Blue had energy to spare. Blue loved to run through the front yard and chase the ball. He would play catch and even learned how to play tag with the grandkids. At night Blue slept at the foot of the couple's bed between their feet.
After 7 years of happy loving home life, the couple that had adopted Blue began to find it harder and harder to keep up. The wife passed away one evening and the husband passed away only weeks later. Blue was to go to their oldest son who had 3 children who would have loved to play with Blue every day and care for him. Instead, Blue went to the couple's youngest son. Unknown to anyone else in the family, the youngest son had a girlfriend who hated dogs. When she was alone with Blue she would yell at him, hit him and throw things at him. After a year of taking all of this negative treatment, Blue snapped and bit the woman. Not knowing what had been going on, the young an had no choice but to get rid of Blue.
Believing it would be the best place for Blue, the son brought the dog to a farm just outside the suburbs. Life was good for a while. Blue had other animals to keep him company, and friendly humans who loved to take him around with them while they worked. Yes things seemed to be turning around, but something was missing. He had two humans who loved him and played with him, other animals, a full belly, and no one hitting him or yelling at him. Life was good. One day however, Blue heard a familiar sound that he had been missing out on. It was the sound of children playing.
